CAD/LAN System Guidebook: FAQ
This section will evolve as the environment and each user develops. If there are any common questions that need to be answered for all, please contact the appropriate CAD manager so they can include those here.
How do I create a new block, where do I store it and what do I call it?
- The BLOCK command is used to create new blocks and to modify existing blocks. Each department maintains its own block and symbol libraries located on the network. Departments are also responsible for naming their own block and symbols so their users can recognize and understand them.
Exactly what scale are the kush files drawn at?
- All of the KUSH drawing files are drawn at a 1:1 scale.
I would like to use a kush... how should I import it
- All KUSH drawing files are on the network for users to XREF into their drawings. The XREF command is used to bring in an image of a drawing from another location to be used with the current drawing.
How can I recover my drawing if my machine crashes?
- Sometimes when AutoCAD crashes it will give you the option of saving your work. If you save your work at this point you will need to use the RECOVER command to recover your drawing file when you restart AutoCAD. If you chose not to save, or if your computer crashes to the point where you need to reboot the computer, then any changes made after the last save will be lost. So you might want to save often.
What are the standard layers we should be using within our drawings?
- Any layer can be incorporated into a drawing. The layer standard are listed in the CAD/LAN Systems manual (section 4). Typically, users should utilize prototype drawings in order to begin with the standard layers of a drawing. Please contact the appropriate CAD Manager for the prototype drawings.
Can I insert a drawing from AutoCAD to a word processor/ how do I do it?
- Yes. An AutoCAD drawing can be cut or copied using Object Linking & Embedding (OLE) and pasted into a Word Processor document as long as both AutoCAD and the Word Processor are Microsoft Windows programs.
How can I find the source of a block inserted in a particular file?
- The LIST command is used to retrieve information about AutoCAD entities, including blocks and symbols, in a drawing file.
Is it possible to create a pattern to be used for hatching?
- Yes. Users can create their own pattern (*.pat) files. However, this is not preferred because almost all existing hatch patterns can be modified using the HATCHEDIT command.
How can I select objects based on common properties?
- Objects in an AutoCAD drawing can be filtered out using the FILTER command. Objects can then be selected through this filtering scheme by their common properties.
